In today’s world, nearly everything we do is performed online, whether it be replacing broken furniture, customizing our playlists, or even ordering groceries. Having a fully-automated life can be extremely helpful and fulfilling, but it is not without its dangers.
Just like pickpockets and muggers in real life, the Internet has its own fiends that mean to do harm to you and your computer in the form of hackers and viruses. There are literally thousands of diseases circulating on the Internet and dozens of new ones are created everyday.
Luckily, we have devised a way to combat these threats in the form of anti-virus software and routine scans. However, knowing which one is the right one for you is the real challenge in a world full of product competition.
The new guy on the market is aptly named the FixMeStick and does exactly as the name suggests; fix your portal to the online world. I recently got myself one in the hopes of discovering a new, better form of virus protection. They have been developing this product since 2011 and doesn’t disappoint.
All that virus protection…in a single USB
First of all, I loved that it arrived in the form of a single USB stick because I’ve always been wary of downloading so-called “virus protection” because I could very well be downloading an even worse virus from a bad site; you never know.
It’s completely idiot-proof in that all you do is simply turn on your PC or Mac and insert the USB stick for up to three separate computers, then onscreen prompts instruct you what to do. After some time, the stick will scan for potential risks, list all threats, and even update itself if needed.
I used the FixMeStick on my four year old Toshiba PC laptop, then after performing a scan followed by its recommended remedies, my Toshiba worked like it hadn’t since its rookie year.
It worked just as well on my newer laptop with Windows 10 flawlessly. The speed at which it runs really depends on how many viruses or “threats” are lying in wake on your system. After using it on two completely different beasts, it was easy to see how it received a four-star rating among Best Buy, Amazon, and HSN.
It’s worth your time
Sure, if you’ve been neglecting your computer for a while then this could take a while and in some cases it is a good idea to insert the FixMeStick and head off to bed. It is also worth noting that you cannot access your system while the stick is doing its work; much like defragging.
The FixMeStick is a real perfectionist, which is apparent as it scans each file three times to ensure that the threat is eradicated and your files are once again safe and clean. For a true test, I ran a downloaded anti-virus program followed by the USB and the FixMeStick found much more than the software did.
Aside from the long run-time, the only downside to this little miracle is that if you own both Macs and PC’s, you’ll have to buy two separate sticks since they each are only compatible with one type. Unfortunately, these sticks are not compatible with tablets or Chromebooks.
